ODMBook Club
The more you read…the better writer you’ll become.
If you’ve watched any of my YouTube videos on practical writing tips, you’ve heard me use this number one tip for beginner writers. I’ve said it many times because it’s true, and I’ll say it again…
Read More.
This doesn’t mean you should grab as many books as possible and begin a crazy ascent into reading.
It means if you don’t read, you should start.
If you only read one specific genre of books, step out of your comfort zone and read a different genre.
When I say read more and the reason I’ve created ODMBook Club is for you to read books with one goal in mind: To become a stronger and versatile writer.
You may ask, “Octavia, how does reading more help me become a stronger and versatile writer?”
Did you know that although writing is a creative process, it’s also a strategic one.
When a writer read books—inside and outside of their writing genre—with the goal of becoming a better writer in mind, they begin to see the author’s use of different techniques, styles, sentence structure, etc. After noticing these different usages of words, plots, and themes, the writer can then determine if any of those styles and technique can be applied to their work.
DISCLAIMER: Do not plagiarize (taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own).
Simply Put: READ the book, UNDERSTAND what makes it a great book, and SEE how you can apply what you’ve learned to your work.
As a beginner writer, your goal is to not only complete your book, it’s to write a strong book you and your readers will both cherish and remember. Reading more is how this is possible.
If you have yet to notice, this is me officially inviting you to join the ODMBook Club on my YouTube Channel @octaviadmason.
