Memories Matter!

Writing Prompt #2:

Write about the best Christmas you’ve had, no matter the age.

Practical Writing Prompt Tip:

Even book characters have memories a.k.a. backstories—places they’ve been and people they’ve met. Memories build characters with depth.

Christmas’ Introduction

The best Christmas I had isn’t the one that focuses on the gifts I received. Honestly, I don’t remember the exact things I received that Christmas morning. However, one thing I do remember is smiles—the innocent and contagious smiles of toddlers.

On that Christmas day, my two oldest nephews were but tiny humans, waddling through the aftermath of opened presents and festive wrapping paper. Even as I write, I see the light of surprise come into their brown-hued eyes.

They were new to the idea of Christmas, of gathering with mom, nana, and tee-tees as we plucked designated presents from under the tree and passed them from one to the other. Like discovering their toes and fingers for the first time, they were astonished.

That day, filled with the whimsical laughter and light giggles of children, is one of my best Christmases.
